peruvianus cacti cuttings peruvianus cactusThe San Pedro cactus is the name given to the species of the genus Trichocereus (T. pachanoi, T. peruvianus, T. bridgesii and T. Terscheckii) which comprises about thirty species, mainly found in the Andes. The one offered here is the popular Peruvian Torch or peruvianus variety. It is a large columnar cactus that grows up to heights of twenty feet. They vary in thier appearance but for the most part are very similar. One thing is for sure. These cacti are mean. The spines we leave on, so be careful. These are fresh cut, alive and ready to grow..

Fast growing columnar cactus
Easy to root from a cutting
.

Roll up a cutting half way in newspaper. Then spray water on the cut end every day. It does not require much water to spark this cactus to produce roots. Sometimes just a humid atmosphere will do it. These guys want to live! You can even merely spray the cactus and newspaper with water daily or ever other day. Just a hint of water will work

Variety of san pedro type cacti in the cutting room getting ready for packingAnother way to root the cactus is to cut the end. Allow it to scab for a few weeks and then plant it in damp rich soil about 2 inches deep. Make sure the soil completely dries out before watering. Then moisten the soil and allow to drain completely. DO NOT OVER WATER. DO NOT KEEP WET CONTINUOUSLY.

Or you can just lay the cactus cutting on it's side on bare soil. Eventually it will start looking for water as it grows roots and it will start growing upright and throwing off pups to do the same.

Another way to make root is to place a wet newspaper over the area you want roots to appear. Leave in a dim room and wait for a couple weeks. Make sure to keep the newspaper moist. Soon roots will appear. Plant as above and watch it grow. It grows fairly fast.
